How to make Shakshouka

  • Olive oil

  • 1 Onion, diced

  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, chopped

  • 1 (red) bell pepper, diced

  • 6 ripe tomatoes, diced

  • 2 tbs tomato paste

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • 1/2 tsp ground coriander seeds

  • 2 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

  • Pinch of fennel seeds

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 4 eggs

  • Cilantro

  • Scallions

Shakshouka is a traditional Georgian dish made of ground lamb and egg. It is often served as an appetizer or main course.

Instructions how ta make Shakshouka

  1. Heat up olive oil in a pan.

  2. Sauté onion. When the onions turns transparent, add the garlic and bell pepper dices. Stir and let cook a few minutes.

  3. Add all the spices (vary amount to taste, those are just suggestions in the ingredients list). When the mixture gets dry, mix in tomato paste. Add diced tomatoes. When the pan comes back to heat, lower the temperature. Let simmer for roughly 10 minutes (open pan, no lid)

  4. When everything is tender, make 4 little wells in the mixture. Crack one egg in each well. Cover the pan with a lid and let steam from anything between 5-10 Minutes, depending on how you like your eggs.

  5. Uncover and sprinkle with herbs. Serve with naan, flatbread, pita or white bread. (I had home-made flatbread)
