When I was a little girl, I always wanted a pet hedgehog. And when I finally got one, I named her Tinka. Tinka loved meatballs more than anything else in the world, and she would do anything to get her hands on them.
One day, I was making her meatballs and Tinka started begging for one. I told her no, but she wouldn’t take no for an answer. She started nudging my foot and running about in the kitchen until she finally got what she wanted. She was so happy with her meatball that she rolled around on the floor like a happy little hedgehog before tucking in. So I’m delighted to share with you Tinka’s Happy Hedgehog Meat Balls recipe.

Ingredients and their benefits to your hedgehog
Beef mince
Beef mince is a great way to get some extra protein in your hedgie’s diet and it woudn’t be a meatball without some meat!
SF50 Powder
SF-50 is a multivitamin and mineral supplement, boosted with added calcium, that is designed to maintain top condition in hedgehogs. SF-50 supplements your pet’s diet to provide comprehensive nutrition in high amounts of calcium, Vitamins A, B, D, E as well as iron and copper. You can buy this in your local pet store or online at Amazon or Viovet:
Safflower or canola oil
Canola oil and safflower oil are a great source of Omega 3 fatty acids which can help control your hedgehog’s dry skin. These oils are also high in Vitamin E.
Dry cat food
Dry cat food is usually your main hedgie’s diet and contains a good balance of nutrients that your hedgehog needs.
Brown Rice
Brown rice contains more fiber which means your hedgehogs will have to eat less to feel full (Ideal if your hedgie is a bit of glutton!). Rice is a very digestible carbohydrate that provides an excellent source of energy for your hedgehog and mixes well with the other ingredients in the recipe.

How to make this Happy Hedgehog Meat Balls recipe
I was so happy when I made this recipe for Happy Hedgehog Meat Balls. I knew my hedgehog, Tinka, would love them. The recipe is simple to follow and includes all of the ingredients hedgehogs need to stay healthy.
I started by browning the beef mince in a pan and then drained off the excess fat. I’m very careful about how much fat is in little Tinka’s diet as she is a greedy hog.
At the same time, I steamed the rice and allowed it to cool a bit before mashing it together with the beef mince with a fork. I added the crushed cat food and SF-50 powder then slowly added in the canola oil until it formed a meatball dough.
If your mixture is dry, add a little more oil. If your mixture is too wet, add some more crushed cat food to soak up the moisture.
Once it’s a nice dough and not too sticky I rolled the mixture into little balls and pressed them into a silicone mold. These are great fun. You can use your ice cube tray, but I like to use this silicone mold for making cake pops as they then turn out like little meatballs!

I froze them overnight in the mold, and once they were frozen removed them from the mold. I popped them in a plastic bag in the freezer and labeled the bag so that my husband didn’t accidentally cook them for our tea! Not that they would have tasted that bad!
I defrosted one cube in the fridge before feeding it to my hedgehog and she loved it! She ate every last bite. I’m so happy that I can give her a quick, easy, and healthy treat.

Cook the rice in a steamer or small saucepan.

Brown the mince thoroughly in a saucepan and drain off the excess fat.

Mash together mince and rice.

Add in the SF-50 Powder and Dry Cat food and combine.
1 tsp SF-50 Powder
100 g Dry Cat Food

Slowly add the Canola Oil ( or Safflower Oil) to form a meatball dough.

Roll into small balls and put into silicone mold.

Freeze overnight.

Once frozen, remove from mold and put into freezer bag and label.

Defrost thoroughly in refridgerator before feeding to your hedgehog.
